What is Prolapse?

Signs and Symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse happens when the pelvic floor muscles and tissues that support the bladder, bowel or womb become weakened, allowing one or more of these organs to drop or press into the vaginal wall.

POP can happen at any age — caused by heavy lifting, constipation, chronic cough, childbirth, or hormonal changes during peri/menopause. It can also appear later in life due to inactivity.

Your Journey

You're not alone in this

A diagnosis of prolapse can feel overwhelming, confusing and distressing — and with so much conflicting information out there, it's easy to feel lost about what to do next.

As Specialist Women's Health Pelvic Physios who treat prolapse regularly, we give you the time and expertise to understand what's happening in your body, and to navigate your options alongside your GP or gynaecologist.

Throughout, we want you to feel supported and guided — through diagnosis and recovery — so you can maintain a full, active life now and in the future.

What to expect

Your Prolapse Assessment

1

Your history

we start by understanding what's led to your symptoms: your health history, childbirth experience, and anything else relevant. This helps us understand whether there's been damage or tearing to the pelvic floor muscles or fascia, and what's driving what you're feeling now.

2

Your examination

Always explained first, always with consent. We assess the pelvic floor to understand whether it's weak or overactive, and where necessary, examine in both lying and standing positions — even with movement — since some prolapse symptoms only show up that way. This helps us give you an accurate picture, not a partial one.

3

Your treatment plan

Conservative, non-surgical options: supervised pelvic floor training and exercise guidance, plus hypopressive exercise (Nicki is specially trained in this) as a valuable addition where appropriate.

"Nicky treated me throughout my pregnancy and was absolutely brilliant. I was given exercises to complete which were easy to follow. Nicky is very accommodating, caring, compassionate, professional and very knowledgeable. I also saw Nicky when I was postpartum and she completed a thorough pelvic assessment and advised me on what exercises to follow. I would definitely recommend her and will be seeing her in the future if any issues arise."
