Prolapse

If you are seeing or feeling a bulge or a lump in your vagina, have a dragging sensation in the pelvis or seeing or feeling something coming down, you may well have pelvic organ prolapse or POP.  POP can happen at any age and can  be caused by heavy lifting, constipation, chronic cough, childbirth or can be a symptom that appears in midlife in the peri or menopause due to changing hormones or later in life due to inactivity. You may experience changes in your bowel and bladder as well such as difficulty emptying fully or needing to go more often or a feeling of not emptying well. Diagnosis of a prolapse can be overwhelming, confusing and extremely distressing for some woman. We are here to help you to understand what is happening in your body and above all to find a way forward to manage this condition and maintain a full and active life now and in the future.

There is an overwhelming amount of information out there about POP and as Specialist Women's Health Pelvic Physios who treat women with prolapse regularly, we are in a unique position to offer the time and expertise to help you to navigate your treatment options and help you to make the right choices for you along the way, together with your team of specialists such as GPs and Gynaecologists. We  want you  to feel supported through your prolapse journey and to guide your recovery.

We have the skills to be able to understand your history and what has led  to your symptoms.  We can examine you and help to diagnose whether you have a weak pelvic floor or an overactive pelvic floor.  We can help you to understand whether there has been damage or tearing to the pelvic floor muscles or fascia after a difficult childbirth and we can also help you to understand the information you have been given by your GP and Gynae and also what questions to ask when you go to your appointments. We are able to feel the structure of the pelvic floor in a lying position and also standing and if necessary with exercise and movement and will be able to educate you on conservative options and pelvic floor training.

We can help you to confidently return to the lifestyle you want through supervised pelvic floor exercise and exercise guidance. Nicki is also trained in hypopressive exercise which can be a useful adjunct for anyone experiencing POP.
